How do you make header Rows follow when scroll down worksheets?

If you work with large spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel, you may find it helpful to keep certain rows or columns visible while you scroll through the rest of the sheet. This is called "freezing" panes. Freezing panes can be especially helpful if your sheet contains column headers (titles) or if you need to see which row you're working on while scrolling through a large sheet. In this article, we'll show you how to freeze panes in Excel so you can keep your place while scrolling.

Before we get started, it's important to note that you can only freeze panes in an Excel worksheet, not in a workbook (a collection of worksheets).

How to Freeze Panes in Excel

There are two ways to freeze panes in Excel:

  • You can freeze panes so that certain rows or columns are always visible when you scroll.
  • You can also use split panes to divide your worksheet into separate areas that you can scroll independently.

Let's take a look at how to freeze panes in Excel.

How to Freeze Rows or Columns in Excel

To freeze rows or columns so that they're always visible when you scroll, follow these steps:

  1. Open the worksheet that you want to freeze panes in.
  2. Select the cell below the row(s) that you want to keep visible when you scroll down, or to the right of the column(s) that you want to keep visible when you scroll to the right. For example, if you want to freeze the top row of your worksheet, select cell A2.
  3. On the View tab, in the Window group, click Freeze Panes.
  4. Click Freeze Panes.

Now when you scroll down, the top row will remain visible. And when you scroll to the right, the left column will remain visible.

How to Use Split Panes to Freeze Rows and Columns in Excel

If you want to keep multiple rows or columns visible as you scroll, you can use the split panes feature instead of freezing panes. To split panes in Excel, follow these steps:

  1. Open the worksheet that you want to split.
  2. Select the cell where you want to split the worksheet. For example, if you want to split the worksheet at row 10, select cell A10.
  3. On the View tab, in the Window group, click Split.
  4. In the Split box, enter the number of rows that you want to display in the top pane. For example, if you want to display the first 10 rows in the top pane, enter 10.
  5. Click OK.

Now you can scroll through each pane of your worksheet independently. To remove split panes, follow these steps:

  1. On the View tab, in the Window group, click Split.
  2. Click Remove Split.

Tips for Using Freeze Panes and Split Panes in Excel

Now that you know how to freeze panes and split panes in Excel, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • You can only have one set of frozen panes or split panes per worksheet. If you try to freeze or split panes again, Excel will remove the existing freeze or split.
  • If you scroll to the bottom of your worksheet and the row headers (the numbers on the left side of the sheet) disappear, it means you've scrolled too far and the panes are no longer frozen. To fix this, scroll back up until the row headers reappear, and then try scrolling down again.
  • If you scroll to the right of your worksheet and the column headers (the letters at the top of the sheet) disappear, it means you've scrolled too far and the panes are no longer frozen. To fix this, scroll back to the left until the column headers reappear, and then try scrolling to the right again.
  • If you have a lot of data in your worksheet, you may want to consider using an Excel table instead. Tables have built-in features that make it easy to scroll through large amounts of data, and they also support features like filtering and sorting.

Excel Column Header Scrolls from Header within worksheet

I have attached two pictures of a spreadhseet where the header row scrolls into the Excel Column Header row. How do I make this happen? This is not my workbook, but I can't figure out how this was done. Seems simple enough but I'm lost.

In one picture you see the typical excel column header of A, B, C, D etc... and the worksheet header below in row 6. In the next picture I scrolled down one row and the Header moved up to the Excel Column Header.

It has to be so simple, but I can't find where to make that change for the other worksheets in this book.

    TIA,

Re: Excel Column Header Scrolls from Header within worksheet

It is a Structured Table. It does that by design.

AFAIAA that is the only way to make this happen ... But normally an advantage rather than a problem. Just select the data on the sheet and Insert | Table. When there is enough data to scroll down, the headers will "move up" to the column headers.

Re: Excel Column Header Scrolls from Header within worksheet

This is a property of tables. The workbook you received is currently in table format, and the Design tab is currently electing to show headers.

The Column headers aren't actually scrolling off, but their values are being overwritten by the headers when they reach the top.

A way to see this is to scroll right until you reach the end of the table and can see a blank column.
Now scroll down until the headers hit the top. You'll still be able to see whatever Column letter in the blank columns.

Re: Excel Column Header Scrolls from Header within worksheet

Thank you both. I actually tried that and it didn't work on the sheet I want it to work on, but I tried it on another sheet and it worked perfectly. It must be an issue within my sheet. I'll have to figure out what that issue is. Thanks again.
