A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Problem on Trains Concept

1) A train moving at speed of 90 km/hr crosses a pole in 7 seconds. Find the length of the train.

The correct option is (C).

Answer with explanation:

Length of the train is equal to the distance covered by train to cross the pole. So, we will find the distance travelled by the train in 7 seconds by applying the following formula:

Distance= Speed x Time

Speed is given in Km/hr so we will convert it into m/s as answers are given in meters.

Speed=90*

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= 25 m/s

Time = 7 seconds

Distance = 25 * 7= 175 meters

2) A train of length 200 meters crosses a man running at 10 km/hr in the same direction in 10 seconds. What is the speed of the train?

  1. 72 km/hr
  2. 95 km/hr
  3. 85 km/hr
  4. 82 km/hr

The correct option is (D).

Answer with explanation:

When the train and man are moving in same direction then relative speed will be the difference between their individual speeds. In this problem the other way to find the relative speed is to divide the distance covered (length of train) by the time taken by the train to cross the man.

Relative Speed=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

We will convert it into Km/hr

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= 72 km/hr

Now, let the speed of the train is X km/hr. So, the relative speed, 72 km/hr = X km/hr - 10 km/hr

X-10=72

X= 72+10

X= 82 km/hr

3) A train moving at 50 km/hr crosses a bridge in 45 seconds. The length of train is 150 meters. Find the length of the bridge.

The correct option is (C).

Answer with explanation:

The distance covered by train when it crosses the bridge is equal to the sum of length of the train and length of the bridge.

Speed of train in m/s= 50*

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Time = 40 seconds

Let the length of the bridge is X.

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= speed of train

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= speed of train

9(X+150) = 45x125

9X+450= 5625

9X= 5625 - 450

9X=5175

X=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= (speed of train)

4) A train is moving at 120 km/hr. The length of the train is 150 meters. How long it will take to cross a platform of length 100 meters?

  1. 10 seconds
  2. 7.5 seconds
  3. 20 Seconds
  4. 25 seconds

The correct option is (B).

Answer with explanation:

Speed of train in m/s = 120 x

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Distance covered to cross the platform is equal to the sum of length of the train and length of the platform.

So, distance= 150+100 = 250 meters

Time =

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

= 250 *

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train
= 7.5 seconds

5) A train of length 100 meters is moving at a speed of 70 km/hr. In what time it will cross a man who is walking at 10 km/hr in the same direction?

  1. 5 seconds
  2. 6 seconds
  3. 8 seconds
  4. 7 seconds

The correct option is (B).

Answer with explanation:

Time=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

In this problem, both the train and man are moving so we will find the relative speed of the train. They are moving in the same direction, so the relative speed = (speed of train - speed of man)

Relative Speed = (70-10) = 60 km/hr

Relative Speed in m/s = 60*

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Distance covered to cross the man = length of the train (100 meters)

Time=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Time=

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

A train moving at speed of 80km/hr crosses a pole in 18 seconds, what is the length of the train

Hi

Given speed = 80km/hr = 80*(5/18) = 200/9 m/s.

The train crosses the pole in 7 seconds and the distance travelled in this process = length of train

Hence, the Length of the train = Speed x Time = (200/9)*7 = 1400/9 metres.

Hope this helps! :)

A train crosses a platform of length 250 m in 20 seconds and crosses a pole in 10 seconds. What is the length of train?

Let the length of the train be L meters

Let the speed of the train be V meters per second.

Given that the time taken by the train to cross a pole is 10sec

Hence the length of the train is given by L=V*10-(1)

The length of the platform is 250 meters and the train takes 20 seconds (from the time of the engine of the train enters the platform at one end and the last compartment leaves the station on the other end of the platform), the equation corresponding to this activity can be written as

L+250=20*V-(2)

Solving equations 1 and 2, we get V=25m/sec and L=250m

Convert kmph into mps by multiplying it with 5/18.

This coverts 90 kmph to 25 mps.

Now train crosses a pole whose length is negligible i.e., 0 Mts.

Now length of train is speed x time
