As we’ve learned over the past few weeks, The Book of Boba Fett is a tome with many characters. Sometimes chapters include Boba Fett and the crime lords of Tatooine, and some chapters don’t include Fett at all. Sometimes they include stars of other Star Wars shows (hi, Din Djarin!) and sometimes they include Luke Skywalker.

That particular guest appearance, which filled up a whole lot of screen time in last week’s episode of Boba Fett, was a bit of a jaw-dropping feat. In order to make Mark Hamill look like he just walked off of the set of Return of the Jedi, a whole lot of CG magic had to be conjured up in order to make sure he looked and sounded like himself. And, well, the details and results of this sorcery are either terrific or terrifying, depending on your own point of view.

So, how did Luke Skywalker return for nearly an entire episode of The Book of Boba Fett? Well, the special effects team learned a thing or two from Luke’s cameo at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2. When Luke returned in that 2020 episode, he spent most of his time shrouded in a cloak and not talking. And when he finally showed his face, he… was… uh…

New Luke Skywalker actor Graham Hamilton has spoken at length about his debut in The Book of Boba Fett—and working with Mark Hamill.

Hamilton, the Luke Skywalker "performance artist" (as Lucasfilm describes it in The Book of Boba Fett’s credits), took to Instagram to pay tribute to the team behind the Disney Plus series.

"Co-creating Luke Skywalker for The Book of Boba Fett with master Mark Hamill was one of the most magical and fulfilling creative experiences of my life," Hamilton said.

"Deep gratitude to Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau for bringing me into the family and to all the geniuses [at Star Wars and Lucasfilm]... It's hard to express what this all meant for me, how unimaginably moving it was and still is."

Hamilton also pointed to several highlights on-set, including lightsaber training, listening to Hamill's stories, and fist bumping with Grogu—a moment that made it into the final cut.

The specifics of the new Luke Skywalker performance aren’t yet known, though The Mandalorian season 2 finale utilized "Respeecher" technology (as well as stand-in Max Lloyd-Jones working alongside Hamill) using hours of older Mark Hamill material to help synthesize a younger speaking voice for Luke Skywalker.

The Book of Boba Fett also addressed other history in a galaxy far, far away. One soundtrack Easter egg called back to Yoda’s Theme from The Empire Strikes Back, while another live-action newcomer arrived in the shape of The Clone Wars’ gunslinger Cad Bane.

Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett has reassured audiences that Grogu is doing well in the care of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. In the most recent episode, Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger, Mandalorian Din Djarin visits The Child, hoping to present him with armor for protection.

However, Ahsoka Tano advises against it and gives the armor to Luke Skywalker. Luke presents Grogu with a choice, either he chooses the armor or the lightsaber who once belonged to Jedi Master Yoda.

Grogu’s decision is left a mystery by the end of the episode. However, most can probably predict what decision he will make.

Once again audiences were presented with a young Luke Skywalker thanks to some incredible work by VFX artists. The first time we saw a young Luke Skywalker, since Return of the Jedi mind you, is during the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian.

Luke Skywalker has returned in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett but who is playing this iconic role?

It was quite the surprise if I do say so myself. Regardless the question we all want to be answered is who is playing Luke Skywalker in The Book of Boba Fett?

Well the answer can be found in the credits and as We Got This Covered pointed out, “his body was played by two people: performance artist Graham Hamilton and stunt double Scott Lang, both of whom are listed as playing “Jedi”.”

But that’s not all. Not only was YouTuber Shamook one of the VFX artists but “Luke’s voice in the episode also followed the route used in The Mandalorian, being digitally recreated via the Respeecher voice synthesizer, though the sound team almost certainly also has an original voice track from Hamill to model the AI performance on.”

That is some incredible dedication! To think how none of this would have been possible when Star Wars first graced movie screens!
