The classic Japanese tale isn’t just a bedtime story anymore: Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is now an anime film. Debuting as the final act of last year’s Busan International Film Festival, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish put a spell on audiences. After pandemic-related delays, the romantic comedy is landing subbed and dubbed in theaters soon, but what about streaming? Despite the title, the animated rom-com follows two human beings who share an otherworldly bond. Tsuneo is a marine biologist who dreams of studying abroad, which would give him the opportunity to dive into new waters and explore new creatures. He meets Josee, a paraplegic, when he’s hired as her part-time caregiver. Sparks fly, tragedy strikes, and the pair are brought together — i.e., the perfect rom-com formula.

Nope, it’s not on Netflix — not yet, at least. Josee, the Tiger and the Fish has yet to be made available on any streaming service because it hasn’t been fully released at the moment. Living in New Zealand or Australia? You’re in luck! Those are the only two places where Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is out in theaters.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish will open in limited theaters across America on July 12. That’s less than a month away. We don’t know where or when, exactly, the movie will be streaming. But Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is produced by Funimation, who host their own streaming service, which could mean it’ll land there.

There are two other adaptations of the classic Josee short story — one from 2003 and one from just last year. Both are live-action, whereas the new film is an anime. Unfortunately, neither is streaming at the moment — but they have been released! So, uh, maybe some day they’ll be on streaming?

I consider myself a very patient person. It takes a lot to get under my skin. Even when I watch bad anime, I still enjoy riffing on the flaws.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish: Release date
The film is expected to release in the U.K. on Thursday, 8th July 2021. For fans in the U.S., the film is expected to be released on Monday, 12th July 2021.
Josee the Tiger and the Fish originally released in October 2020 at the Busan International Film Festival and a month later in Japan. Since then, fans around the world have patiently waited for its international release. However, due to the pandemic, it was delayed.
The movie has also already been made available in Australia from 10th June 2021 and New Zealand from 13th May 2021.
Please note: An expected release date has been given so far as there has not yet been an announcement for the official release date. This means the release could be subject to change.

Where to watch Josee, the Tiger and the Fish
- For the U.K. the film is set to release theatrically by Anime Limited. For fans in the U.S. the film will be made available in select U.S. AMC theatres.
The movie is will be showing in select AMC theatres, which can be seen on the AMC Theatres website for fans in North America, when it releases.
Which U.K. cinema the film will be premiered in, has not yet been confirmed at the time of writing. Therefore, we will endeavour to update this article, closer to the time of release.
Madman Anime have acquired rights to the film for Oceania and released the film in New Zealand cinemas as well as select Australian cinemas. This can be seen on their official website.
