Why is obi wan so weak in kenobi

Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries has just premiered and people seem to be quite satisfied, despite a slow start. Ewan McGregor has finally returned to the role that made him famous and fans around the world are happy to have him back. But, McGregor has also raised some questions about his role in the new Star Wars miniseries. One of them is related to Obi-Wan’s powers in the miniseries; we see Obi-Wan as a seemingly weak person and in this article, we are going to explain why that is and whether he will get stronger by the end of the miniseries.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is not weak, he simply refused to use his powers in order to avoid being discovered. Absolutely, a Jedi must train to keep his level of skill intact, but one does not simply forget years of dedicated training, both in lightsaber use and in the Force. There is absolutely no doubt that we are going to see Obi-Wan use his powers more in the upcoming episodes.

The rest of this article is going to focus on the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi, his skills, and their role in Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re going to find out all the details about Obi-Wan’s powers, as well as why he refused to use them in the first two episodes of the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries. Be careful, though, as we are going to reveal a lot of spoilers in the upcoming paragraphs.

Is Obi-Wan weak in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries?

When we first see Obi-Wan Kenobi after a decade, he is a seemingly weak, older man who works in a meat processing facility somewhere on Tatooine. He has visions of the past and he does seem to have communicated with his former master, Qui-Gon, but he doesn’t use the Force anymore and he has hidden his lightsaber as well. He has severed his connection to the Force, much like Luke Skywalker in the Sequel Trilogy, in order to stay hidden. But, is he actually weak? In order to answer that, we are going to go over Obi-Wan’s exploits from this period – those unrelated to the miniseries itself – to show you the true extent of the Jedi’s powers (the stories, of course, are all canon).

In preparation for Luke Skywalker’s future training, Kenobi wrote a set of journals that he placed in a box with the words “For Luke” written on it. In one of his journals, Kenobi wrote how he prevented Jabba Desilijic Tiure’s men from collecting a water tax from local farmers during the Great Drought, in 11 BBY.

He made sure Jabba’s thugs didn’t extort money from the Lars to pay the tax; and after subtly using the Force to stop thugs from attacking a city’s population, Obi-Wan decided never to go to the city again. That same night, he sensed that Luke was in danger, since the boy had gone to retrieve the water from Jabba’s men to return it to the farmers.

Kenobi went in search of him, Force-switched off the lights of Jabba’s men’s vehicles to hide his identity, and attacked them with the Force. One of them knocked Luke to the ground, knocking him unconscious with a blow to the head. When Obi-Wan had dealt with all the thugs, he carried Luke on his back to the Lars’ farm and left before Luke woke up. Luke’s bravery convinced Kenobi that the end of the Jedi was not yet come, and he renewed hope for him.

In 10 BBY, Kenobi observed young Luke piloting a ship through Beggar Canyon. Obi-Wan noted how similar Luke was to his father, Anakin Skywalker, and expressed concern about it. While trying to impress his friends with a flashy stunt, Luke damaged the ship and his uncle Owen Lars forbade him to fly anymore.

Kenobi, feeling sympathy for the boy, protected a group of Jawas who were having trouble with Tusken bandits. That night, Kenobi communed with Qui-Gon Jinn and expressed his hope in Luke’s abilities. Tusken bandits soon arrived to attack the Jawas, but Kenobi was able to dispose of them by stealing one of the Tusken’s weapons. So, he was rewarded by the Jawas by receiving the parts Luke needed to repair the ship from him.

At a droid auction, Luke received the ship parts from Obi-Wan. Luke thought the parts were a gift from his uncle, and he thanked Owen before running back home. Satisfied by the boy’s enthusiasm, Obi-Wan watched everything from behind a tent.

Later that day at his shack, Kenobi was preparing dinner when he was interrupted by a visit from Owen. Owen had deduced that Kenobi had provided Luke with the ship parts, and demanded that Obi-Wan have nothing to do with his family. So, he pulled out a toolbox that he had confiscated from Luke and threw it on the floor of the shack.

Kenobi responded with some sarcastic comment before stating that he just wanted to help. Owen continued to be angry with him, calling him dangerous and troublesome. As Owen left, Kenobi admitted to himself that danger seemed to follow him wherever he went, but it always ended up getting him out of the way, recalling his confrontations with Count Dooku, Grievous, and Darth Maul.

Thus, Obi-Wan concluded that no danger would lie in wait for young Luke as long as he lived. At this time, Jabba the Hutt hired the bounty hunter Krrsantan to assault Owen, who he believed was responsible for attacking his men during the Great Drought. The next day, Owen changed his mind and bought some new parts for Luke’s ship.

He searched all over his farm for Skywalker, hoping to repair the ship with the boy to apologize for his behavior the day before. However, he was ambushed by Krrsantan the Black as well as kidnapped. Luke, for his part, had left home. He covered a short distance before he felt – possibly thanks to the Force – that something was wrong in his home.

Back home, he found his aunt Beru wounded, who informed him of everything that had happened. Beru left home armed with a rifle, leaving Luke behind.

While meditating in the Dune Sea with a herd of banthas, Kenobi felt a disturbance in the Force. He climbed up a hill and found Krrsantan beating Owen. In the ensuing conflict, Kenobi was trapped by a stun net thrown by the Wookiee. Krrsantan then knocked Owen off the mountain, and he had to grab onto a ledge.

Obi-Wan escaped the web and blinded the Wookiee, running to Owen to help him. However, Krrsantan intervened and hurled a massive boulder at Kenobi, who split it in two with his lightsaber, slashing Krrsantan’s eye in the process. The remains of the rock fell near Owen, who began to fall off a cliff until Kenobi grabbed him with the Force.

However, as a result of one of Krrsantan’s constant attacks, Obi-Wan lost his concentration and Owen fell again, only to be saved by Luke aboard his ship, which he had already repaired. Obi-Wan then disarmed the Wookiee, who fell down the side of the mountain. Krrsantan was not killed, and quickly escaped from Tatooine to avoid Jabba’s wrath.

Owen met Luke again at the foot of the mountain and gave him a big hug. Looking over to where Kenobi stood, Owen gave the Jedi Master an approving nod. Although there was no exchange of words between Obi-Wan and Owen, Kenobi was glad to see the family reunited. Then, Obi-Wan returned to his family, as he called his herd of banthas.

Between them, he looked up to the sky to see Luke piloting his ship again. Later, Kenobi was visiting Mos Eisley for supplies when he had a vision of a mysterious man. Kenobi recognized the man as Garro, from a story Grandmaster Yoda had told him. Later, he would write the story in his diary. He also had an encounter with his old nemesis, Darth Maul, at some point, but that is a story for a different article.

As you can see, Obi-Wan Kenobi is far from being weak. All the events that we have described happened during the period portrayed in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries and they portray Obi-Wan as, still, being one of the most powerful Jedi ever. Now, in order to stay hidden and watch over Luke Skywalker, he had to sever his connection to the Force and hide from the Empire. This is why he seems weak, while he actually is not. In the next section, we are going to tell you whether you can expect to see a stronger, more realistic Obi-Wan in the remaining episodes.

Is Obi-Wan going to use all of his powers in the Obi-Wan miniseries?

Undoubtedly so. Namely, we know that Obi-Wan is going to face Darth Vader once again and we also know that Vader won’t hesitate to take revenge on his former Master. Regardless of the fact that there still was some good left in Anakin, at that point in his life, he just wanted revenge; he was a true Sith Lord in every meaning of the word. This means that Obi-Wan is going to have to give it his all to survive, and since we know that he did, in fact, survive, we can deduce that he is going to give it his all.

On top of that, there are the Inquisitors Obi-Wan is going to have to avoid and face, which he will not be able to do in his current state. This is why we are absolutely certain that we are going to see more of Obi-Wan’s powers and abilities in the later episodes of the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries.

As for his lightsaber capabilities, he's pretty weak there too. Of course, we don't blame Obi-Wan — he recently dug his weapon up for the first time in nearly a decade, so yet again, it makes sense since he has to get used to fighting with it.

Nevertheless, we think he managed to hold his own for a bit during his latest duel with Darth Vader; despite the Michael Myers-esque villain being at what seems to be his strongest, Obi-Wan survived the battle, albeit not in the best shape.
