‘We just can’t seem to get away from adversity’Ian Book really never had a chance. The 23-year-old rookie quarterback was full of optimism Friday afternoon, three days before he was expected to start for the Saints in prime time on Monday night. He happily described how everything had worked out for his family to be able to see his first professional start. Even his brother, who just finished boot camp in Georgia, would be able to get to New Orleans in time to see him under center. By the middle of the fourth quarter of an eventual 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins, his family probably wanted to cover their eyes. December 27, 2021 at 11:31 PM EST Dolphins defeat Saints in 20-3 winMiami used a conservative low-risk game plan to grind out a 20-3 win over a depleted New Orleans squad in the Week 16 Monday night contest. Injuries and COVID-19 issues had left the Saints shorthanded at nearly every position and forced them to give rookie Ian Book his first NFL start. Miami took full advantage of their personnel edge, as they tallied a 28-yard Nick Needham pick-six on Book’s second pass of the game and racked up eight sacks in the contest. They also held Alvin Kamara to only 59 yards from scrimmage, which is his third lowest total in that category this season. The Dolphins offense did not fare much better, gaining only 259 yards on 59 plays, but they get did a strong day from Jaylen Waddle, who posted 10 catches on 12 targets for 92 yards and a third quarter touchdown. Waddle’s performance helped him set a Miami rookie record for most receiving yards. His 93 receptions are also the second most behind Anquan Boldin’s 101 catches in 2003. The eight sacks were the most by a Miami club since 2012. He also tied Jerry Rice for the most receptions by a rookie in a Monday night game. Miami’s win streak has now been extended to seven games following their 1-7 start. This makes them the first team to ever post a seven-game win streak and seven-game losing streak in the same season (per the ESPN broadcast). With the win tonight, Miami moves into the last wild-card spot in the AFC thanks to having a better win percentage than Baltimore in conference games and a better win percentage than the Chargers vs. common opponents. New Orleans falls to the No. 10 seed in the NFC, ranking them last among the 7-8 teams. Miami (8-7) travels to Tennessee to face the Titans in Week 17. New Orleans (7-8) hosts Carolina next week. The Athletic NFL StaffDecember 27, 2021 at 11:05 PM EST A landmark game for the Dolphins defenseThis type of performance doesn’t happen very often for Miami. The Athletic NFL StaffDecember 27, 2021 at 11:00 PM EST Taking a lot of sacksIan Book is on pace to have the second-highest percentage of his dropbacks end in a sack in the past ten years. Only Marcus Mariota in 2018 during Week 6 against Baltimore saw a higher percentage of his dropbacks end in a sack (42.3 percent, 11 sacks and 15 passing attempts) than Book has had. Since the year 2000, only one other QB has had a higher sack rate -- Jay Cutler in 2010 Week 4 against the New York Giants, with 9 sacks and 11 attempts (45.0 percent). Aaron Brooks in 2006 opening weekend for Oakland against San Diego tied Book's current 33.3 percent mark. Arif Hasan·December 27, 2021 at 10:54 PM EST It's been that kind of nightThis clip is a microcosm of how the game has gone for Ian Book tonight. New Orleans has now gained 14 or fewer yards on eight of its 10 drives tonight. Miami will be in clock running mode with the ball near midfield about halfway through the fourth quarter.

December 27, 2021 at 10:32 PM EST No offenseNew Orleans has to feel great about holding Miami to only 4.9 yards per play, but the Saints 3.1 yards per play has crippled their offensive efforts tonight.
