Tony moved up to the United States Auto Club series after competing in the UMRA and continued racing midgets until 1988. He won the USAC triple crown in 1995. He also began racing stock cars around this time.
He debuted in the NASCAR Busch Series in 1996, driving for team owner Harry Rainer. During this time, his highest result was 16th. He also competed in the Craftsman Truck Series, where he placed tenth.
Unfortunately, during these early years, Stewart had a habit of not finishing races, which hurt his rankings in the Indy Racing League. He did, however, finish sixth in the 1997 Indy 500, demonstrating his ability.
The next year, he won his first race at Pikes Peak. He was given the moniker “smoke” at this moment.

Controversy
Stewart collided with Kevin Ward Jr.’s vehicle during a sprint car race in New York in 2014. Ward collided into a wall as a consequence.
Ward from his car and walked across the track, furiously yelling at Stewart as he approached in his own vehicle, despite being unhurt by the crash. Tony then murdered Ward by striking him.
Stewart was not initially charged with any criminal offenses, but in 2014, he was charged with manslaughter.
A grand jury, however, refused to prosecute him on the accusations. Tony was found to be inebriated on cannabis at the time of the occurrence, and there was no proof of criminal intent on his behalf.

The debate, however, did not stop there. Ward’s father afterward published a public statement in which he questioned various aspects of the occurrence. He was perplexed as to how Stewart’s automobile was able to swerve to the right so quickly before colliding.
He also questioned Tony’s “forgetting” what caution meant before the disaster. Stewart subsequently published a statement claiming that the incident was “completely unintentional.”
Tony’s legal problems did not stop there. Ward’s surviving family members stated in 2018 that a wrongful death case had been resolved out of court for an unknown sum.
