What Disney Plus movies were removed?

A week after six of Dr Seuss books was were pulled out for racist content, Disney+ has removed access to some of its classic movies for children under seven years of age as these films contain racist stereotypes.  Those over seven can have access to the movies which include hits like 'Dumbo', 'Peter Pan', Swiss Family Robinson' and 'The Aristocats'.  The films though now contain disclaimers that read as, "These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together." The films will not be listed on young children's watch list any more but parents can still show the films from their own profiles if they want to.  Under the service’s Stories Matter section, Disney explained its decision of removing the content.  'Dumbo,' made in 1941, features a group of crows who "pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans."  1953 cult classic 'Peter Pan' includes exaggerated racial stereotypes of Native people, including a song called 'What Made the Red Man Red.'

'Swiss Family Robinson' from the 1960s reinforced "otherness" by portraying the barbaric pirates who attack the family as a "stereotypical foreign menace," with many of the pirates depicted in 'brown' and 'yellow' face.

Recently, the Walt Disney Company has been taking steps in an effort to become more sensitive to cultural issues.

Last year, they added “inclusion” as a fifth key in the company’s core values, and they also announced a refurbishment of Splash Mountain themed to Princess and the Frog. The company shared recently that they would be adding an advisory on Disney+ in front of films that were deemed culturally insensitive, and now we’ve seen some movies removed from children’s profiles for that very reason.

As reported by The Telegraph, multiple classic Disney films have been removed from profiles set for “Kids” on Disney+. So far, we’ve noticed Aladdin (including the Live Action version and sequels), The Aristocats, Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, and Swiss Family Robinson have all been taken off.

With this statement, Iger referred to the films in Disney’s Signature Collection — Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Bambi, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Aladdin, 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, and The Jungle Book. So you can at least rest assured that those movies aren’t going anywhere.

Unlike Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, Disney refuses to warn before titles are removed from the service. While we can’t help you there, we can at least share this – accurate records of every title removed from Disney+ USA along with the reason it was removed and any information on its return. Disney removes a lot less than other services, but that’s no excuse for being sneaky about it and angering subscribers.

UPDATED: April 2022 – So many removals lately… way too many…

The beginning of the month will often see Disney remove certain titles from Disney+ due to existing contracts. March 2022 will continue that trend as six titles have been removed from Disney+ in the United States so far.

The removals came as a bit of a surprise since Disney+ does not announce which titles will be leaving every month like other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu.

Some of the titles below are expected to return to Disney+ after pre-existing streaming contracts expire.

Baby Bink couldn’t ask for more; he has adoring (if somewhat sickly-sweet) parents, he lives in a huge mansion, and he’s just about to appear in the social pages of the paper. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is as nice as Baby Bink’s parents; especially the three enterprising kidnappers who pretend to be photographers from the newspaper. Successfully kidnapping Baby Bink, they have a harder time keeping hold of the rascal, who not only keeps one step ahead of them, but seems to be more than a little bit smarter than the three bumbling criminals.
