Introduction to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, in Chester county, is 11 miles NW of Wilmington, Delaware (center to center) and 30 miles W of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are 5,273 residents in the town. Kennett Square History This area, which was originally inhabited by Lenape Americans, was initially named Kennett after the river in England. Square was later added to the name to commemorate William Penn's one square mile land grant. The person responsible for introducing mushrooms to this region was William Swayne, who imported spawn from Europe to growing them. Things To Do In Kennett Square Brandywine River Museum, which displays local history exhibits, also has an art studio. Brandywine Creek State Park is spread across 933 acres and features trails, and fishing areas. Other attractions in the area include Longwood Gardens, Brandywine Zoo, and White Clay Creek State Park. Kennett Square Transportation The nearest major airport is Philadelphia International Airport. There is also the option of walking if it is a short distance, since the town is so small. For longer distances, there is the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line that runs through Downingtown and Exton to Philadelphia, and also the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL IATA). Walking is the best way to get around the town center. A bike is a nice way to explore, as well, but to get much further a car will be needed.
