The characteristics of intercultural communication include knowledge, patience, empathy, open-mindedness, and tolerance. Intercultural communication requires both the sender and the receiver to understand and respect the reality of differences and a willingness to learn the best ways to improve communication. Four Characteristics of Competent Communicators. In addition to having knowledge and the ability to adapt to various communication contexts, competent communicators also have the following four qualities in common: they are prepared, clear, concise, and ethical. Researchers have broken down the characteristics of competent communicators into five (5) areas: self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, cognitive complexity, and ethics. We shall define and discuss each, in turn. that define a competent intercultural communicator.
For example, a competent communicator will engage in turn taking when in conversations instead of interrupting. A competent communicator would know when it is appropriate to ask questions to further the conversation, and read nonverbal cues/feedback from the receiver to know when the conversation is over. Communicative competence is the ability to achieve communicative goals in a socially appropriate manner. It is organized and goal-oriented, i.e. it includes the ability to select and apply skills that are appropriate and effective in the respective context. It includes verbal and non-verbal behaviour. Making your verbal communication as informative, honest, relevant and clear as required for a particular situation. The single most important characteristic of competent communication, because other people count on the fact that the information you share with them is truthful. An effective communicator is someone who conveys their message thoroughly and is receptive and responsive to others’ input. Those who are strong communicators speak in a clear, direct manner, using easily understood language. Tips for Achieving Successful Intercultural Communications:
To be a competent communicator, you should have cognitive knowledge about communication based on observation and instruction; understand that individual, social, and cultural contexts affect competence; and be able to adapt to those various contexts. Truthfulness & honesty is the most core principle of ethical communication. The three most critical elements of intercultural communication competence are knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Examples of intercultural competence A good example of intercultural differences is the different attitudes to politeness in different cultures.
